27th August 1895, on a very stormy day, four set off in a boat carrying the urn containing Friedrich Engels’ ashes. The four included Eleanor Marx, youngest daughter of Karl Marx.
Eleanor was carrying out Engels’ last wish, added as a codicil into his will, after he’d spent his last dying days resting, on doctors orders, in his favourite seaside town of Eastbourne. He’d been visiting the town for 16 years, most frequently residing at 4 Cavendish Place, often joined by Karl Marx and family, and other socialist comrades.

Just imagine bumping into Engels and Marx as they take Engels’s favourite walk from the pier along the promenade and onwards up onto Beachy Head.
