POETRY CAFE EASTBOURNE @ TOWNER – 04.07.25.

What a treat this event was, the second time Poetry Cafe Eastbourne have hosted at The Towner art gallery. Local poets recited their poems that were inspired by the various exhibits in the Towner Summer Exhibition Sussex Modernism (curated by Dr Hope Wolf). This poem, A Better Life For All, by Keith Willson, was inspired by the exhibit of the 2 central panels of the 1976 mural “The Forward March Of Labour” aka “The International Workers Mural”. The mural depicts the struggles and solidarity of the Labour and Trade Union movement. Until 2014, this 89 foot long mural was displayed at Eastbourne’s Transport and General Workers Union Recuperation Hotel for Workers, (now The View Hotel). The mural was carefully dismantled during the 2014 refurbishments, when the hotel was rebranded for tourism and visitors. Unite The Union still own and run the hotel.
No worries if you missed the event because Eastbourne Solidarity create a video of “A Better Life For All”. https://youtu.be/qwx5lFwF3hw?si=WMyu3NgGcuu9zEls
Note, you can also find 2 other poems by Keith Willson on their YouTube channel, in the People’s Eastbourne playlist.
